Real master of Hong Kong pushes fake democracy plan

Zhang Xiaoming, Beijing’srepresentative in Hong Kong, insists that the election plan offered by Chinawill go ahead despite widespread condemnation by Hongkongers.  The controversial proposal allows China toscreen and pre-select candidates to ensure that they are sufficiently"patriotic" and pro-China, which many argue runs counter to the"one country, two system" principle and promise of "a high degreeof autonomy" underpinning the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to Chinain 1997.  Being head of China’s LiaisonOffice, Zhang is the de facto master of Hong Kong and sees nothing wrong withsuch an electoral system, calling it "universal suffrage with Hong Kongcharacteristics".  One wonderswhether Zhang, as a loyal member of a totalitarian regime, is best placed tounderstand Hongkongers' desire for self-determination and freedom.
